jetting

Postby badbanshe on Mon Nov 23, 2009 1:46 pm

Banshee with T-5's and K&N pod filters, I will be running 40:1. I think I am going to jet the bike before I take it out for the first time.

I talked to cascade and they recomend 310 main jets, 30 pilot jets and their performance needles.
Does this sound about right?
By doing this I should be good? Or is there more to it than just replacing the jets and needles?
The labore alone is $150, so I would rather do it my self and save the money unless there is more to it than I see.

I have never done this but my dad knows about jetting cars, so he will help me.

We were running in that range w/stock carbs. A bit fatter, I believe, but had carb mount K&N's - no airbox, more squeeze. Long time ago, I'd have to go check notes... I would not bother spending any $$ on stock carbs. Either go single, or go bigger. You'll wind up there eventually, anyway... ;)

The only true way to know what your setup needs in the way of jets is to do a "plug chop" and read the plugs. That will tell you the truth and not guess as the guy making the recommendation from his phone or parts counter. They usually jet want to sell you something any way.

Warm the engine up and then make a WOT run of at least 30 seconds (a minute is better) in high gear. Then pull the kill switch and disengage the clutch. Now pull and read your plugs. both cylinders may not require the same jets, even though they usually do, do not assume. See the following chart. Anything lighter than #9 in a 2 stroke is looking for trouble.

Just a reminder the speed limit on the Beach at Sand Lake is 25 MPH. Bad place to try for the plug chop. I use coming off the top of the first bowl headed to the parking lot. If I really time it good then I can roll to a stop after the engine cut off real close to the parking lot and then just a short push or tow to camp.

Also make sure that no one is following to close so as not to give the appearance of Racing.

If I do it my self do I have to worry about setting the air screws also?

The air screws are idle mixture only and will not effect WOT main jetting. Changing the main jet should not effect idle speed or mixture either.

I think I have it all figured out. I changed to 40:1 gas oil ratio and did a plug check, then took the plugs to Yamaha. We are going up two sizes from what ever it has now. So hopfully friday I will have the jetting issue taken care of, and only have to worry about getting legal sound level silencers before I can hit the dunes (I don't want to use my hush kit unless I have to). Hopfully you guys will have something comming up. I want to ride!!!!!!!
Thanks for the help. 8)

I thought I had it figured out. I was just reading the other jetting question from someone else. About changing them at the coast. If I were to set it up for there, what would I do once I have it perfect here? Do you lean it out or richen it up for the coast? And do you need to totally remove the carb to change the jets? Seems like it would be a problem doing it at the coast if there is some wind with sand all around. When I get my new jets I will buy and assortment, I can understand the need. But other than just playing around at the house I plan on only taking it to the coast (as of now) to ride. :?:

I'll be at Sand Lake for the weekend camping in the tree line. Look for a Gold F250 pulling a Weekend Warrior with a Fat Old Guy on a Blue Banshee

If you get your jetting set right at Richfield, you well be good at the coast. Altitude is the biggest issue and you are well within a 1000 feet of the coast, sea level. If you were at say 3000 feet, east of the mountains then you would end up lean at the coast. Since I ride everywhere from sea level (home) to 7000 feet, I installed Dial-a-jet kits on both our quads. Now with a twist of a screw driver I can adjust the jetting richer or leaner as necessary.

I just got mine from Pro-caliber Yamaha, I have no idea of the brand. Cascade sells a set for banshees also, they are the ones who told me the sizes to use.
