Polaris / KTM motor trick?

Postby Jerry&Laura on Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:27 pm

New neighbor just moved in next door, and (COOL  ) they are quad riders! We were talkin' :blahblah: about my new Polaris 525, and he mentioned that one of his buddies with a KTM 525 (basically same motor) had told him of a trick to get a bunch of free extra power, :secret: and I wanted to know if anyone had heard about this....

Supposedly there is a second wire coming to the coil (a brown wire?) that if disconnected, lets the motor run stronger. I looked at my coil, and sure-nuf theres the brown wire.... he said that the KTMs even have an inline bullet disconnect that can be pulled apart to achieve this little mod.

So.... has anyone heard of this, and what do you know? I'm gonna try it to see if there's a difference. I might install an inline disconnect so that I can return it to normal if necessary.
Thanks for your input!

Probably disables the Rev Limiter (safety feature). I'd do my research before pulling out the wire cutters. :nono:

We don't have any 525 riders here other then you. You might find the answer on the Polaris Riders forum. There are a ton of Pred/Outlaw riders over there.

prolly has to do with the TPS.

The bikes don't have this (full power all the time)

I have read about this. It is to advance the timing and provide more power. I have heard it is safe and a lot of guys do it.

So, does the lead (when connected) limit the advance, or provide a built in retard? Then disconnected, might it disable this retard / advance limitation?

I'm gonna go scoure the Polaris / KTM forums........

Scrambler 525, or Outlaw 525??? I thought the Scramblers were either 400 2-strokes or 500 4-strokes.

Nope, scrambler 500 has a 525 ktm motor, thats a fun bike. A 525 sprt quad with 4 wheel drive. All most bought that instead of my new sportsman but i fell in love with the bike and went for it.That scrambler is realy fun and super forgiving (to a point) for a new rider. My girlfriend loves it,and after rolling it about 15 times down a hill and riddng it out, thats one of the toughest bikes I have ever had the privilage of riding.

From my understanding it is a built in retard. Check out KTMTALK. com There is a good write up and long thread discussing it.

Well i think any bike or motor has its special tricks on its sleeves, it just he matter of discovering it and i believe the rev limiter was disconnected on that quad.

I have 2 friends, one has the polaric outlaw 525, and the other has the ktm, after the brown wire mod was performed on the polaris, it had a 7mph higher top speed than the ktm. according to a GPS.

Never heard of this trick, did it work? I have two outlaws and would like to know if it worked. Also, does anyone know of some upgraded more durable inner cv boots for the IRS Outlaws?
